Family Guy Friday

The Lauren Conrad Family Guy episode had so many priceless moments. This was an especially effective "cut to commerical break" bit:

I HAVE AN URGENT ANNOUNCEMENT

I am addicted to grocery shopping. YES, GROCERY SHOPPING. I have gone grocery shopping almost EVERY day this week. You'd think I could go once and be fine... but nope... For some reason I have to go EVERY SINGLE DAY. Okay, I don't have to, but now since we moved we live right near this AMAZING Whole Foods that is massive and amazing and has so many attractive potential husbands. OKAY SO MAYBE I LIKE GROCERY SHOPPING IN MY TENNIS CLOTHES BECAUSE I LOOK REALLY TAN AND I AM HOPING THAT MAYBE I WILL FIND SOME HEALTH-CONSCIOUS HOTTIE WHO ALSO PLAYS TENNIS. But considering it's Venice it's a lot of hippy/hipster types. I'd probably be better off shopping at the Bristol Farms in Beverly Hills if I were really looking for a hubby. And mabye I am and MAYBE I AM.

No really I just am so indecisive when it comes to food and what I want one a day-to-day basis that I just tend to grocery shop A LOT. Last night I confirmed that Trader Joe's has an excellent music selection. Less attractive people however.

Tonight I plan to go straight to the gym. I WILL AVOID THE GROCERY STORE AT ALL COSTS. Although I am wearing a cute dress today... WILL POWER! SERENITY NOW!

Karen O = K.O.?

So my friend KO sent me the link to the new Yeah Yeah Yeah's video "Heads Will Roll" (great song btw) this morning because the synthesizer in the intro is the EXACT SAME ONE she has. Which reminds me of the video for "Zero" when Karen O. is wearing a jacket that says KO on it. They are like friend soulmates or something. KO: I implore to create some hot beats that Karen O. would approve of.

Uggghhhhhh

That is how I feel today. Ugggghhh. Or maybe: blaaaaaaaarg. I guess I shouldn't expect anything different after a spectacularly long weekend of lounging and enjoying some much-needed extended time off from work. Good news is, it's a short week. AND my friend Ida bought me this sweet GOD BLESS AMERICA freedom stand thingy at the dollar store yesterday. AND I am wearing a crazy bright colored shirt today which makes me somewhat happier. Oh and as it is after Memorial Day I am wearing white pants because, yes, I still subscribe to that Labor Day-Memorial Day rule. AND INTERNS ARE HERE. God, I love interns. I can't wait to give them all sorts of boring crap to do for me. Oh and apparently that last post about Tucker Blair really got people talking because apparently Tucker Blair is really poor quality knock-offs of this other brand Smathers and Branson (so screw you Tucker Blair) but who knew that needlepoint accessories could get people so passionate? Today I am wearing two pinky rings on my right hand and a big green peace sign on my left hand pointer finger. The pinky rings I usually wear separately--one was my mother's ring from when she was in boarding school and is sort of a puzzle ring kind of thing, and the other is this little David Yurman band with a yellow sapphire that my grandmother gave me. The big green peace sign ring I bought for $12 this weekend. Talk about high-low... right? Tennis tonight. I'm both excited and dreading it because right now I sort of just want to sleep... And I'm rambling... it's a stream consciousness today, folks!

Tucker Blair (another reason I love Twitter)

So earlier this morning I was commenting on my Twitter feed about my outfit today, one that is essentially a variation of what I've worn for about 2o years of my life, but only appropriate at my current job on a causal day (which, being the day before a holiday weekend, today is). I guess one of the words I used in that particular "tweet" was picked up by this company Tucker Blair (I am guessing it could have been "topsiders" "Vineyard Vines" or "polo") and now the company is following me on Twitter... and so I checked out the site to discover Tucker Blair sells all those needlepoint accessories I used to LOVE. My aunt actually makes them, and they usually have family members' initials on them (I need to put in a request, now that I think of it), but what I love about Tucker Blair, besides the "key fobs" (I am going to buy one I've decided... leaning towards the sailboats, shown below) is the mission statement, which is completely un-ironic and therefore amazing:

"Have you ever sat down at your desk in some anonymous, beige office building, sifting through Excel spreadsheets and realizing that you’d give just about anything to be on the Cape with a beer and a pair of Croakies? Yeah, so have I. Not long after graduating from Colgate, corporate America got real old, real quick. So I set out in 2007 to create a line of needlepoint products that would be second to none in quality, while not breaking the bank. My friends and I always loved wearing fun whimsical needlepoint belts, but the cost was always prohibitive, and I knew that paying retail just meant we were putting more money in a store’s coffers. "

It goes on. Seriously. For several paragraphs. It's really worth the read.

(Also, I find him attractive. Yep, that preppy asshole look? Totally my type. Nantucket red pants? Sign me up.)

I am sure some of you might be asking, "is this guy for real?" To which, I respond, yes, yes he is, and I went to college with about 500 variations of Mr. Llewellyn and I LOVE HIM. And I love this company. If anything, the LA ironic hipster scene has made me more nostalgic for the completely un-ironic, sincere WASP New England look that I so miss. Now how about that key fob?

Hey, at least I can laugh at the silliness of it all, right? I'm completely self aware... I guess (no, I seriously want that). But anyway, thank you Twitter, for not only giving me the outlet to wax poetic about my androgynous clothing selections on "casual workdays" but for bringing companies like Tucker Blair into my life.

Some Advice for this Holiday Weekend, and beyond

Don't get me started on my Middlebury commencement speaker because my class got completely screwed. Instead, let's marvel at the delight that is Ellen DeGeneres' speech to Tulane.

Another one (thanks to DiTonto):

BLAME KANSAS

Okay. This post was going to be "Blame Earthquakes" but then I remembered when I drove cross country and somewhere around the middle we decided our new slogan for everything that was wrong would be BLAME KANSAS because driving through that state is a miserable experience, whether or not it is the birthplace of Bob Dole and home to the country's largest steer. (WTF is the difference between a steer and a bull, by the way? Anyone know?)

So anyway, I didn't post yesterday. And I didn't realize it until around 10:30pm last night when I was getting ready for bed. Yes I go to bed early. Well I get into bed early but don't usually go to sleep until around 11:30pm. What I do in that hour--no idea. Oh wait, yeah last night I watched Bones and compulsively checked Twitter trends. I need to start reading actual BOOKS again, clearly... alas the internet addiction is slightly out of control BUT I DIGRESS.

I am really quite disappointed in myself that I didn't post at all yesterday. March was such a landmark month for posting and then April and May I have just really been slacking. What can I say--with so much going on between work and the move and a GODDAMN EARTHQUAKE every other day, I can't help it. And now it's almost summer, which is truly a lost cause, however I WILL DO MY BEST, I WILL!

But I just ate some frozen yogurt and feel a little ill because I do believe I am slightly lactose intolerant, so I need to take a moment.

In other news, it's a long weekend--so yes, fewer posts, but hot damn I am EXCITED.

What day is it?

I just prematurely posted this post. I am in a complete and utter daze right now. I don't even know if I am spelling correctly or making sense... I think it's a combination of move-recovery, being forced to data check pages and pages of market research surveys all day, and just staring at a computer screen in general.

I also am 100% sure I am addicted to the internet--further proved by the fact that once we got internet up and running at our new place, depsite being in bed at 10pm I wasn't lights-off in bed until around 1am. And what was I doing? Who knows... wasting time on the internet... spending most of it looking at mock-ups of rooms on Ikea and Pottery Barn, getting excited about my new headboard. Which led to the follow question: if I am excited by a headboard does this mean I am adult? Going to go with no... back to the number crunching...

Rap + Disney. Sure.

I totally forgot I had intentions of posting this last week when one of my friends sent it to me, but then it popped again today from another friend and I was reminded of how BRILLIANT this video is. Alice in Wonderland, meet Three Six Mafia:

Weekend Recap

It’s been some time since I’ve posted any extensive rambling recaps of my inconsequential life so why don’t I get you all up to speed...

Essentially all my thoughts/spare time of late have been directed towards MOVING because yes, we roommates have moved... and have acquired a 4th roommate, who is officially Roomie #3 but I shall refer to her henceforth as Becca because that is her name. Yes, our crazy life of 20-somethings with tanorexia and a passion for Friday Night Lights has just taken on another duckling and we couldn’t be happier. And our new place is a serious upgrade from the last. No pool, however. (Pool floats, I shall miss thee). But the wet bar and sun deck make up for it, as well as the proximity to so many DELISH bars and restaurants.

Moving is not fun. Okay, that’s a no-brainer, but seriously... wow. Saturday was an epic day of U-Hauls, kind friends offering their muscle, lots of sweating, exhaustion, sheer amazement at how much crap we’ve acquired, and the penultimate satisfaction of somehow doing it all in a day. Sure, by Saturday night I was a zombie, walking around Whole Foods realizing I hadn’t eaten since a bagel at 7:15am but unsure of what cuisine could ease the total body exhaustion.

Yesterday was much better—the morning started off with the Farmer’s Market, coffee on the deck and lots of visits from friends. The day didn’t end so well with yet another earthquake, and this time it was a biggie, causing me to freak out, practically to the point of tears, then take some anti-anxiety medicine and drop into a dreamless slumber (thank God). Worth noting: during the earthquake Adubs ran to protect the fish, Ashleigh grabbed the TV, while Becca and I stood facing each other under the doorway and poor Becca had to witness my freak out firsthand. Per usual, I had thoughts of “Oh my God, this is it, this is the big one, I am going to die.” But it passed, everyone was unharmed, including the TV and Snoopy/Blue (the fish). I went to bed immediately afterwards because I couldn’t handle it, and DiTonto adorably woke up in the middle of the night thinking there was another quake, checked on me and realized if I was asleep and not freaking out she was imagining it and went back to bed. What a lovely roommate family we have! (Although I’ve been informed I have to hold her hand in the water because her phobia is, yep: sharks. That's okay though, I love the ocean and find sharks FASCINATING).

In other news I had a bowl of rice for lunch. I wish I was kidding. But see, we got back most of our security deposit from our old apartment, so I got excited and saw a special on Amazon to purchase the first three seasons of Bones for a ridiculously discounted price so I did that but then I realized that was probably not a smart impulse buy and am relegated to eating whatever food I already have in the office all week. Look for yogurt, oatmeal and fake meat products to be a regular part of my diet over the next few days...

More later, especially regarding the Citizen’s Arrest and the Chapstick Bandits, but for now I should get back to that “work” stuff I do sometimes.

Citizen's Arrest: A Lifelong Dream

There's a long story behind this post, and I'll have to get into details later, but for now, let me just say that a stand-up Santa Monica police officer told Adubs the other night she should feel free to make a citizen's arrest whenever necessary. To which I say, FUCK YES.

And how!

Wardrobe Lows

So this morning I was browsing my closet, trying to figure out what to wear to work, a more difficult task than usual considering it's been about a month since I've last done laundry, when I decided on a pair of lime green pants. Yesterday I wore a pair of kelly green pants. And I realized, as DiTonto once alluded to herself on this here blog, I could wear a different pair of green pants everyday of the week.

Well not anymore. Because I am such a disaster I spilled my lunch all over my green pants which are sure to now have some oil stains. Additionally, my sweater, one of my favorite navy blue J-Crew pullovers, has not one, not two, but THREE holes in it (two on the elbow, one on the side). So I am just looking fantastic.

I am a klutz on so many levels... and remember that New Years Resolution I had of getting my shit together? So not happening... and this little sign I have taped to my keyboard doesn't seem to help either.

(yes, that's real. I'm not very professional).

American Idol Queen

Okay so despite my sincere contempt for American Idol I have actually seen more of the show this season than any other... thanks to my AI-loving roommates. I wouldn't say I am a fan of the show, but I am definitely more tuned-in.

Just the other night I was trying to figure out what was so fantastic about Adam Lambert and decided that he had that Freddie Mercury/Queen quality to him (P.S. I'm not the one who thinks he's so fantastic but the rest of America seems to feel that way). I love Queen. LOVE. I usually put them on my list of top 5 favorite musical acts. Senior year of college there was a period of time where I listened to their greatest hits album in excess.

So you can imagine I was excited (and feeling quite satisfied by my proven smarts/foresight) to see this post on an EW blog today, discussing how Lambert should step in as Queen's new lead singer.

Wait a minute. Since when did Queen replace Freddie Mercury? Maybe I am not such a big fan as I thought because I had NO IDEA the band was still kicking around. Strangely enough, I like this idea... I see potential...

TODAY'S NERD STATUS: HIGH

This could be the coolest website in the history of cool websites:

Star Wars Soundboard

In related news, you know how I want to name my first dog Chewbecca and call him Chewy? Well, our neighbors have a 3 month old Lhasa Apso puppy and it kind of looks like an ewok so I've decided that will be the breed of choice... LOOK AT THIS ONE:

Dig it

New jam from The Crystal Method featuring Matisyahu. It's a good one.

P.S. I should mention that The Crystal Method did the Bones theme song...

a meal deal

Apparently May 11 (TODAY) is "Eat What You Want Day." (I have no idea who decided that was the case and why, but I think I read it on some website somewhere so I am going to run with it).

I had a delicious MEAL DEAL at Subway for lunch. I fucking love the Subway meal deal. Best $6 to spend. Seriously. Later I'm thinking of picking up some Hot Tamales because "I might go to the gym later so I deserve a treat." (Not the case, I just wanted to quote a very relatable quote from 30 Rock. I actually am not going to the gym today, but starting my move--yes, we're moving!--so lugging boxes will be part of my workout).

I desperately need to go grocery shopping. Last night's foray to Vons for a hodge podge of items (Shampoo, Snickers Ice Cream bars, and Pirate's Booty) will not suffice.

Family Guy Friday

Today's Family Guy clip is actually AMAZING because it is not at all from a Family Guy episode, but rather from the GENIUS Bones-Family Guy crossover of last night's Bones episode. Yes, I know what you are thinking--isn't Bones live-action while Family Guy is animated? Indeed the truth. And I would go into the whole back story as to what is happening here and why Booth is hallucinating Stewie in the interrogation room, but instead, as I'd previously suggested, just start watching Bones and work your way up to this season so you can marvel in the delight that is this ingenious crossover.

My favorite Stewie line: "Night's darkest gloom washes over my tiny frame." I just love that evil baby (oh and in a previous scene in the episode Stewie, true to character, hits on Booth).

Hell, this is DINOSAUR!

Along the same lines of Flea Market Montgomery comes Jones' Good Ass BBQ & Foot Massage (and maybe truck rental and storage too?). It's HILARIOUS.

"All meats tenderized to their optimum deliciousness..." I AM SO THERE.

An Open Letter to the Bonnaroo PR Team: Stop Rubbing Your Awesome Line-Up in my Face!

Dear Bonnaroo PR Team,

Thank you for once again sending me another emailing touting the highlights of this summer's festival, reminding me once again that in 2007 I had one of the best times of my life, but also that I am in no position economically or otherwise to go the festival this year. What's that? You have Phish? Twice? Yes, I would chew off my left arm to see them, but alas, my left arm is unavailable for chewing because it's too busy punching the wall. Oh, I'm sorry, did you say Springstreen? Excuse me while I cry in a corner. And that whole thing about David Byrne curating some shows featuring some hot up-and-comers...? I am going to live in denial of this merely existing, because it pains me too much.

The only comfort I take in these regular emails is that I recall the three days of camping in the fields of Manchester, TN in the middle of June to be somewhat miserable, thanks to scorching temperatures. At least at Coachella I got to stay at a condo. WITH A POOL. So you can suck it, you "Woodstock of today" and take your awesome line-up and crazy hippies and delicious food and ferris wheel and I hope everyone gets heat stroke (except for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs because I worship the ground Karen O walks upon).

Regards,
Stamos

HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO!

Today the universe does not shit on Mexico. Today the universe APPRECIATES Mexico. (Although apparently Mexico doesn't care about Cinco de Mayo? I think this is a holiday meant strictly for excessive taco & beer consumption).

In other news, apparently Mexico is still riddled with Swine Flu. HAPPY CINCO DE MAYO MEXICO!

OH SHIT! My orchid, Lulu, (that's Horace's girlfriend) is wilting. HOW DO I TAKE CARE OF ORCHIDS? WHO AMONG MY READERS HAS A GREEN THUMB AND CAN SHARE SOME ORCHID-CARING TIPS? I should call my step-grandmother and ask. She has like 100 orchids. That's what she spends her money on. Orchids and White Persian show cats. I am in no way joking. I hate White Persian show cats. No cat should be allowed to have LONG HAIR. NONE. And certainly not white hair. That is disgusting. HONESTLY. But my step-grandmother, well she's great. A real character. I could do without the cats...

Holy Shit I'm a Tool

So I blasted a little self-promotional shout-out for the blog and the Star Trek review on my Gchat status, my Facebook, and my Twitter. And then I realized, I am a huge nerd. I mean, yeah, it's pretty damn cool I got to see the movie a few days before its release, but also--I'm a tool. Can I be a cool tool? (By the way, anyone remember Cool Tools?) Yeah, I'm a cool tool.

And in TV land...

Just a little round-up of my TV-related thoughts this week.

-This week's issue of Entertainment Weekly has a nice little review of Bones inside, calling it "TV's most dependable romantic screwball comedy" which it certainly is, combined with some compelling crime solving, of course. I just had to share because as you've probably noticed by now, when I get excited about a show or a movie--I want to get other people in on the fun. There are only two episodes of Bones left this season, but it's worth checking out, and the pilot is available on Hulu now. Rather than watch crappy summer TV this year, try out an existing gem and get caught up in time for the new season to start in the fall.

-Also, I have to say something about Better Off Ted because it's been getting lots of buzz on the internet and is one of those shows rumored to be "on the bubble" for ABC's schedule next year. I will admit I have not been a regular viewer, but it is a great show. Truly hilarious. Worth checking out, worth saving. Long live the sitcom!

-I haven't been keeping up with Gossip Girl but I am psyched to see the upcoming episode with the backdoor pilot for the spinoff. This sentiment is based purely on my interest in seeing some sweet 80s fashions.

-I've really slowed down in the Buffy watching, I guess that happens when real life catches up to you. I have more than half of the last season remaining, but am already starting to get excited for what show I am going to Netflix next. I'm thinking either Big Love or Dexter... anyone have a strong opinion either way? Although I could really go for another epic sci-fi series... suggestions are appreciated!

I'd like to marry Chris Pine, please (or, STAR TREK, the Jaw Wired Shut Review)

Thanks to a kind friend, last night I got to catch an advanced screening of Star Trek on the Paramount lot.

Well wait a minute. Before I launch into a review, let me provide some back story here, as I think it’s important to explain my degree of Trek fandom, especially as I imagine there are many who remain wary of seeing the film. I have never seen the original series, at least not that I can recall. My Star Trek memories are mostly of The Next Generation, and UPN and Captain Jean Luc Picard, and Data and a little bit of Deep Space Nine—but all this was mostly in the background because my older brother watched TNG, not I, or at least not intentionally. My grandfather was a big fan of the original series and some of the spinoffs, if I recall correctly, and I know when I was little he and my brother used to talk about the show, and I definitely picked up on details just being around their conversations. I certainly was never an obsessive fan, not nearly as much as I was for Star Wars or a show like The X-Files. I’ve seen the most recent two Star Trek movies before this one, but their plots don't stick out in my mind (I doubt they do for anyone). However, as a lover of the science-fiction genre and with a basic understanding and appreciation for the Star Trek universe, as well as being a longtime fan of J.J. Abrams work, I was really excited for this latest incarnation.

It doesn’t disappoint. The movie is thrilling. From the very first shot of space and that terrifyingly intricate Romulan ship, the film takes off at a high speed. When we first meet the young James T. Kirk, it doesn’t slow down—not for young Spock, and not as our two heroes first meet each other as young men—the plot moves quickly, not necessarily at a frantic pace, but one where I couldn’t turn my eyes away and even though I had to pee really badly during the entire film (thanks to two pre-screening margaritas), I didn’t get up. I just couldn’t (you probably didn’t need to know that, but I thought it might strengthen my glued-to-the-seat claims. Whatever).

There’s a moment where we see the Enterprise for the first time, in all its glory and I swear, I had goosebumps. It’s such an iconic image—as well as the Starfleet uniforms, it’s like revisiting with long lost family members, both comforting and new, like there's something still to be discovered.

The film definitely has that J.J. Abrams feel, and having watched many of his many television shows, I noticed a lot of the usual J.J. players on screen that other fans might not. It also reminded me a bit of the current season of Lost when the story delved into the future and time travel and destiny. The special effects were stunning, groundbreaking even—so much that at certain points I couldn’t imagine anything being fake or CGI or in front of a green screen, it all felt so real and yet larger than life.

The movie is well cast, no mistakes there. And it’s fun to see hot, young actors take over these roles, reintroducing familiar characters, and definitely in a way that a total Star Trek virgin could enjoy. I mean, how could you not enjoy Chris Pine. Dude is going to blow up after this film. Not only is he insanely attractive, but he’s got the charisma and the acting chops. (Okay, but yes, he is INSANELY attractive).

Now, I have no idea how critical diehard fans are going to feel about the movie, but I do know that non Trek fans will be able to enjoy the film, and I think that anyone at least familiar with the Star Trek characters and universe will truly appreciate the series’ well-executed reinvention. Sure, it has it's campy moments and I got lost in some of the "science," but I think that's a given with nearly any genre flick, especially one as iconic as this.

And the very last scene (SPOILER ALERT!) really tugged on my heart strings—watching the ship travel past the stars, hearing Leonard Nimoy utter that iconic line: “Space: the final frontier. These are the continuing voyages of the starship Enterprise. Her ongoing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life forms and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.” It was then I suddenly realized that I knew the exact quote, and I felt transported to a different time myself, recalling my youth, and my grandfather, and the old TV in the house I grew up in, and the blue leather sofa in our living room. And that was movie magic.

(On a side note: every time Nimoy was onscreen, or at least every time I heard him speak all I could think of was the Boston Museum of Science, because it’s his voice that does the introduction in the IMAX theater with, “Welcome to the Mugar Omni Theater, this is Leonard Nimoy.” Man I loved that museum as a kid...)

So to wrap up this shoddily organized review (I think I am still collecting my thoughts but I wanted to get this up here as soon as I could this morning), I really enjoyed the film. It was really fun, very thrilling, exciting, and even had some great comedic moments (my favorite quips came from Scotty and Bones). I need to see it again I think, so I can more fully wrap my head around it (maybe minus the margaritas this time), but it was awesome. And I cannot wait for the next one. The Star Trek series has been resurrected.
And can I just talk about Chris Pine again for a second? Yeah...

Happy Star Wars Day!

Roommate Annie made my day this morning with a lil Twittering and a "may the 4th be with you!" That's right folks, it's Star Wars Day--the 4th day of every month where huge tools get to be huger tools and make bad puns. (I recommend logging onto Twitter and look at the search results when you type in Star Wars, it's actually kind of hilarious).

Rather than watch Star Wars today I am watching Star Trek. Yep, the new one. THAT'S RIGHT FOLKS I AM SEEING STAR TREK TONIGHT. BEFORE IT COMES TO THEATERS ON FRIDAY. AT A SPECIAL SCREENING. BECAUSE I AM SPECIAL (not really, I just have a friend who's totally hooked me up). You know what that means? A review tomorrow...

Blog Updates

You'll notice the "Right Now" column on the right over there (-->) now has one of those embeddable players in it. Rather than tell you what I am listening to everyday I figured I'd actually share the songs. I'm obviously music-obsessed and love sharing new tunes, so enjoy! (And if you have any suggestions for new artists I should get into, let me know). I also figured that little "Right Now" box could use an update. If anyone has any ideas for other features/changes I could make, let me know, I'm all ears...

Neon Colors, Stickin' it to the Man Since 1984

The first Lilly Pulitzer dress I remember really loving (brace yourself, WASP alert) was one of my mother’s, from when she was young. It was a bright yellow shift with a lace detail around the bottom hem—lace in the shape of pineapples, and it’s worth mentioning she’d cut the dress to make it shorter (what a floozy!) when she was in high school. I first wore the dress in middle school, for a theme dance, but then in the summer time, when I realized Lillys were still acceptable at our country club (not only acceptable, but expected) I just started going Lilly-crazy. When I was really little my mother had always dressed me in Lilly-themed clothes, lots of bright colors, florals, patterns, and I almost always had a massive bow in my hair until I was 12 and decided I had outgrown my bow phase (don’t worry, I resurrected my love affair with ribbon in college—yes, college—when I started to wear them with ponytails). When I graduated from college the dress under my gown was—yep—a Lilly. A really bold one, with big parrots on it and pink and green and a waistline that made it look like a 10 year-old’s party dress. I was happy as pie (you know as I type this, I am having writing deja vu so there's a solid chance I've written about this before, but excuse my poor memory retention, and just enjoy the story, okay?)

By the time I graduated my Lilly Pulitzer collection was excessive, especially after years of vacationing with my Lilly-loving step-grandmother in Naples, Florida. I only have some of my dresses with me in LA (it’s not so much of a Lilly city), while the rest are in my closet in New York or in Maine. All in all, it’s something like 2 bathing suits, 6 shirts, 2 beach tunics, 2 pairs of shoes, 13 dresses, 2 scarves, 8 skirts, 3 sweaters, 3 bags, 2 pairs of shorts, and yes—even some overalls (granted, some of these I inherited from my mother, but keep in mind this doesn’t even include her original Lilly collection that I still have). So yeah, it’s utterly excessive and borderline disgusting, but I love each and every one of them. Oh and I even have some Lilly jewelry.

What can I say—I have a thing for bright colors, bold patterns and exciting prints. As I mentioned, LA isn’t a city where you spot a lot of Lilly, although there’s a store that sells dresses up the street from my current apartment and I imagine if you hit some Beverly Hills ladies’ luncheon gala fundraising event you’d spot some pink-and-green.

Since I’ve lived here I’ve modified my Lilly-love to just generally use LA’s great weather as an opportunity to wear bright colors all year round. I rarely wear one of my bold dresses, but I always sport one on Easter and maybe if I am at a day party. However, as I am noticing that neon and bright colors are big this season, I am going to start wearing Lillys to work. Yep, I’m going there. I’M CRAZY LIKE THAT.

Yes, I often talk about my wardrobe choices at work, and it’s heavy on the J. Crew, but also heavy on pushing the envelope, because unlike the majority of my suit-wearing company, my department, being “creatives” gets to get a little creative with the dress code. So in my own form of silent rebellion, a little Stamos-sitckin’-it-to the-man, I wear as much neon or bright colors in a given week as possible, and I think I am going to bring back retro-50s-housewife with my caché of Lilly Pulitzer goods. So far the HR fashion police reprimanded me once for questionable footwear (Jack Rogers--puhleeze), so I'm going to keep it up.

Today for example, I am wearing a denim dress however yesterday I got a great mani-pedi where my color of choice was, you guessed it, NEON ORANGE (you can see a pic in my Twitter feed). And my scarf today (love scarves)—also neon orange. While I am a teeny bit annoyed that neon is the color swatch of Spring ’09 (I like being a little unique in my affinity for brights), it’s just that much easier to find fun clothing items. I also have recently rediscovered Pac Sun, a store I definitely haven’t given a second thought to since middle school, but have noticed that it’s a great spot to pick up inexpensive bright-colored duds.

Family Guy Friday
