CulturePOP

Have I mentioned the new website I'm writing for? (Apologies again for that pesky short term memory if I have). I am going to assume no... so yay, I am writing for CulturePop.com which is all about "Ingredients for an Artful Life" or as I like to call it "A publication besides The Huffington Post that my family can be proud I write for."

I've done a batch of "Picks" pieces for them - but my most FAVORITE posted today - "Some of Our Favorite 80s Inspired Things." Not only did I get to plug my favorite hot pink lipstick but I got to share my love for the new Cut Copy album again.

Make sure you guys check out the post - and better yet, - subscribe to CulturePOP's regular newsletters!

The Best 80s Ski Movie

HOLY MONKEYBALLS YOU GUYS!!!!!

ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES EVER IS NOW STREAMING ON HULU:

SKI PATROL

I know what you're thinking - you're thinking this looks like another shitty 80s sports movie. You know what? You're right. It is shitty. But it's so shitastic it's FANTASTIC. And personally, it is my favorite of the bad ski movies (in comparison to Aspen Extreme and Ski School, at least).

WATCH IT AND REJOICE!

If Firefly had been on in the 80s...

...then it probably would have lasted more than one season. Oh and the credits would have looked something like this:

Pretty rad. Although I do love the original Firefly theme song. You know, I think this might be my favorite Joss Whedon show...

gimme!

Do you know what that is? That is a glow-in-the-dark Tron hoodie. Obviously I plan on seeing Tron Legacy and obviously I need this rad sweatshirt. Mostly because it's glow-in-the-dark and I mean, who doesn't love clothing that glows? IN THE DARK? (Besides the unfortunate people forced to sit with you when wearing said glow-in-the-dark clothing?)

I have even have a glow-in-the-dark Lilly Pulitzer skirt. That's like the 80s meets Palm Beach Prep meets awesome. I need to dig through my closet for that radness ASAP...

  • Catchy hook
  • Sweatbands

A Nautical State of Mind

All week I've been thinking about how I want to really complete the interior decorating in my room. My room - which I lovingly call "The Boat" - is mash-up of nautical themes and a child's bedroom (I legitimately have a painting called "A is for Ann" that I had when I was a little girl). I'm hoping to get something over the top, something to just really bring it all together... I'm thinking a giant oar, or maybe some lobster buoys. Perhaps a fishing net. You know, just get real down and dirty nautical.

And for some reason I threw on my topsiders this morning in a last minute change from heels... so let's kick of the weekend in this nautical state of mind, and enjoy my favorite 80s music video to feature a boat: Duran Duran's "Rio."

Sports Doc Must Watch: Magic & Bird

Last night I finally watched HBO Sports' Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals, a documentary I'd been anticipating seeing as soon as I heard about its existence.

The film did not disappoint, in fact Magic & Bird far exceeded my expectations. I was blown away, so much so, that I had tears rolling down my cheeks the last twenty minutes of the film which is NOT common for me.

I have a soft spot for sports documentaries as it is, and as I grew up in the late 80s and early 90s, much of my youth was spent obsessing over Magic, Bird and the Dream Team. I remember sitting at my counter eating breakfast before school and my dad quizzing me on the names of the Dream Team members. We used to have the plastic cups with all their pictures and stats - Magic Johnson was the first time I heard about or understood what HIV and AIDS were. I know that many other children who grew up in the same time would agree, and that nostalgic component makes the film that much more enjoyable.

My dad instilled a great love for the game of basketball in both my brother and I, and there was no better time to appreciate the sport then during the years of the Magic-Bird rivalry, and even I only got the tail end of that. This film is so spectacular, not only for showing the extent of their rivalry, but for showing their profound connection to each other, and sincere friendship. A must-see.

The Soundtrack I Never Knew I Needed

I'm on a big music kick these days. I think that's because, for starters, I've been doing a lot of reading, and I really like to have good chill music to listen to as I am plowing through pilot scripts. Furthermore, it's just about a month and a half until Coachella, which means I'm getting into concert-mode.

Lately I've been going through my iTunes catalog to listen to the albums I bought over the past year or so but never gave the thorough listen they deserve. One such album is M83's Saturdays = Youth, which I've decided is my version of the 80s soundtrack to my life, I never knew I was lacking until I found it. Seriously. The song "Kim and Jessie" is so epic in it's potential for running over the opening credits of a John Hughes high school drama, that I think I need to write it into some sort of 80s tribute movie.

Here's a sweet vid of the band performing the song live in 2008 on my favorite radio show, "Morning Becomes Eclectic."

I'm pretty sure this movie has potential to be the best film since, well, Ski Patrol

Growing up there were two ski movies I adored. Aspen Extreme and Ski Patrol. For so long I've dreamt that once again this genre of film will be revived. And at long last, it looks as though my dreams will come true, in the form of Hot Tub Time Machine.

Am I right or am I right? And exactly how much do I love 80s ski themes? Check out this pic of myself & friends at a party this past September. The theme was "family reunion" and we went as an 80s ski fam, obv (and that's me in the glorious one piece, all the way on the left).

Food Coma

Had one of those monthly lunches with co-workers (gotta love corporate bonding) and I am now suffering a severe food coma. WHAT DID I HAVE FOR LUNCH? I will tell you. I split (with my friend who I shall refer to as V) a salad and a turkey burger and both were delish. And now I just want to take a little sleep on my desk. However, I do believe that sort of thing is frowned upon.

In other news, I just read a fascinating New Yorker piece that, among other things, looked at the longstanding pop culture obsession with vampires. It's really an astute point. Which makes me wonder, what IS IT with people loving vampires? I mean shit I would be all about having a forbidden love with Edward Cullen or Angel ANY day (but not that Bill dude on True Blood, he's gross), so my next question is, does that make me extra weird? (I say EXTRA because I am already regular weird). Maybe I am just a hopeless romantic? (Ew. I also like a nice steak and long walks on the beach). Maybe I am a tween? Maybe I should go write some shitty fan-fiction and publish millions of books to angsty tweens/housewives Twilight style? I mean, think about it. Anytime anyone writes a book or creates a film that has something to do with vampires people go nutso for it. Clearly, the human inclination is for a sadistic obsession with a blood-sucking demon, so perhaps I should look for a way to capitalize on our perverse nature.

Anyway I have big plans tonight to purchase a tennis skirt and tennis shoes. See, now that I am SERIOUS about tennis (and seriously less terrible than I was--still moderately terrible, though) I need to start looking the part a little more. This doesn't mean I will cease attending classes in various themes (various themes usually translate to anything 80s when it comes to me), but I need some more appropriate/practical clothes (aka a pair of shoes that prevents me from falling, which almost happened in Sunday's lesson).

Okay I have to go procrastinate some and then I have to stare blankly at my computer screen and then I have to daydream and then I have to think about doing work and then I am going to have to do all the work I have to do in the last hour during which I am supposed to be here.

Adieu.

Watching the Watchmen (A Jaw Wired Shut Review)

I have not read the graphic novel the film WATCHMEN is based on. However, I can imagine (and have read repeatedly) it is a tome of epic proportions, this statement now enforced by my viewing of the film at a midnight screening last night. Prior to watching the movie I regretted not having read the book—I’ve wanted to read Watchmen for a while but it had been relegated to a long list of “books I intend to read” some time ago. Now, I feel as though I have to read the book. I simply must. While the movie was fantastic, I got the sense the book would be an unparalleled literary experience—much how I feel about Lord of the Rings. The films are incredible at putting that story to life, and while they are faithful—it is impossible for a movie to completely capture the grand scope of the tale, and such is the case with Watchmen, even in such a detailed adaptation.

Yesterday when I told people I was going to the midnight screening of Watchmen, I was greeted with varying responses. My brother was envious, a co-worker declared my Geekdom official, and a friend asked “Why? It’s gotten terrible reviews.” Indeed, reviews have been mixed—but a common complaint is that the film is too faithful to the book, and at 2 hours and 45 minutes—I don’t doubt that. Certainly, its length is exhausting—especially at the end, when I was again reminded of Lord of the Rings and its multitude of endings. However, I appreciate when a film is faithful to a book, and also when a film does what a book cannot, be it eliminating extraneous story lines, or putting words to image. Watchmen must have been a bitch to adapt—you already have images, as it’s a graphic novel, and an extensively intricate one at that. One of the reasons I wish I had read the book before seeing the movie was because in some scenes it was obvious certain frames were exact replicas of a comic panel—as a book fan that would have been very gratifying.

The film’s plot is complex and smart; one in which an alternative history of the US is imagined, complete with Nixon in a fifth term as president and the US and Russia on the brink of nuclear war. It’s 1985 and masked vigilantes—the superheroes that comprise the Watchmen—are outlawed. Cities are gritty, full of crime and paranoia. It’s oddly beautiful, however, both the cinematography and the effects. I especially loved the 80s jams accompanying the film, as well as the clothing. Overall the setting was spectacular, which made up for the occasional lack of backstory or confusing plot hole.

Watchmen is not for the faint of heart. It has graphic violence and sex, spans settings from New York to Mars (yes the planet) and Antarctica. The plot is complicated but packs a punch—there’s a great twist, and Easter eggs planted in many shots (probably more for original book readers—another reason I need to get my hands on a copy of the novel) and even with the length, I was captivated well into the wee hours of the morning. In fact, I want to see it again. I’m not sure that the average comic book movie fan will enjoy this—some of my friends didn’t love it as much as I did, even if they were X-Men or Dark Knight fans. I do think it’s worth seeing—it’s groundbreaking and thought provoking and one hell of a ride.

The 80s are back. No, for real.

Front page of The Huffington Post this morning:

My first thought? AWESOME. Then I realized this wasn't a big rally of excitement for the return of neon, spandex, and Ray Bans (which apparently have already returned thanks to all those asshat hipsters), but in fact the return of a Regan-like era chock full of economic downturns every which way. And apparently E.T. and David Hasselhoff.

WAIT A MINUTE. HuffPo is so hilariously misleading. The actual article this headline links to is isn't about a sudden 80s time warp, just more of the same blah blah blah we're totally fucked blah blah blah. They just wanted an excuse to put up a photo of pre-nose job, pre-crazy Michael Jackson. NICE TRY HUFFPO.

I'm going to go envision an articel that is REALLY about the BADASS 1980s, not this shitstorm financial crisis.

ALSO

Do you remember Popples? Holy SHIT looking at photos of them make me sick to my stomach because I WANT ONE AGAIN SO BADLY. I mean it's really weird how obsessed I am with a weird stuffed animal that could fold in on itself but SERIOUSLY I loved those little dudes. I FEEL ILL WITH WANT.

OMG DO YOU GUYS REMEMBER FASHION PLATES?

HOW F-ING GREAT WERE THOSE?

Some Wednesday Nostalgia

Holy Smokes! It's been far too long since I've posted a favorite movie/tv show/song of the past. Here's one to kick back into gear.

PEE WEE HERMAN. Despite the man behind the mask (and his exhibitionist tendencies) my brother and I grew up stark raving mad for Pee Wee and his adventures. Which explains a lot about me today. For example--my penchant for really weird shit.

Enjoy!

I remember just really wanting to live in his wild house. I also remember that as much as I loved this show, I was also very frightened by it. And upon a second viewing--who wouldn't be?

David Byrne is THE MAN

My love for The Talking Heads knows no bounds. They would definitely rank in the top three of my top five favorite music acts (also up there would be Queen, The Police, Paul Simon, Manu Chao and probably a lot more than five) and Byrne is definitely the weirdest and coolest musician out there. He's recorded da new album with Brian Eno which is streaming live and you can order from their site. I listened a little bit this morning and highly recommend.

The Return of Huey Lewis & The News

I couldn't be more thrilled right now. I was just tooling around on my iphone (working hard, right?) and was browsing some of the new tunes available on iTunes (wow Apple sure does have a hold over me) and am so pumped that Huey Lewis & The News have a brand new track written just for Pineapple Express.

HUEY LEWIS!!!

I love Huey Lewis. Not enough to fork over around $50 two summers ago to see him in Boston (boy was I cheap then--granted I was an intern making $10/hr which is sadly not too far off from what I make now), but enough to convince my roommates that we NEED a framed photo of Huey Lewis for our apartment. Ashleigh went a step further and ordered an issue of Rolling Stone from 1984 with Huey himself on the cover. It's going to be AWESOME.

And now I am going to download this hot new jam... oh wait, no I am not. It's available on "Album Only." Damn you iTunes, that's $10 that can be used to payoff one of the many car-related fees I owe right now.

Yep, still that cheap.

And here's Huey Lewis & The News, performing the new single on Jimmy Kimmel recently. God his hair looks great.

P.S. Pineapple Express is the kind of POT they are smoking (apparently). hehehehe.
