The Most Important Excel Spreadsheet Ever: Fall TV 2011

Hey guys! If you've found my blog from my Tumblr, my Twitter or my most recent HelloGiggles Open Letter (to Fall TV, duh) then you know what this is about... oh yeah and that subject heading up top probably tipped you off...

So if you click here you should be able to see and download my color coded Fall TV 2011 spreadsheet! It's nothing super fancy but it's got all the network shows on it and you'll get a glimpse of what shows I'm going to be watching this Fall!

Some things to remember -- I simply don't have time to watch everything and even though it looks like I do, I don't. So please don't give me a hard time if I'm not watching or recording a certain show. That being said, I love to talk about TV and tell you about it and well, being that I currently WORK on a TV show (coughcough watch The Finder when it premieres in January coughcough) you should totally feel free to chat with me about TV shows whenever you want.

I've been blogging here, predominantly about TV, for the past four years, and although a lot of my online work is now delegated to Tumblr, Huffington Post or HelloGiggles, I still do check in here on occasion with stories about the behind-the-scenes day-to-day of the television industry and also when I want to freak out over something. Also did you guys watch Up All Night? Second time watching the pilot and I loved, loved, LOVED! Thank goodness Will Arnett is finally on a show that seems to have a real chance of sticking around!

YAY! TV! Oh and in case that link didn't work for you, here's the spreadsheet again:

New Beginnings! (Featuring Runon Sentences, Digressions, and Excessive Use of Caps Lock)

Exciting news YOU GUYS! I got a new job! And for the first time in my Hollywood career I can actually publicly talk about where I am working which is a big weight off my shoulders. (And I guess I can tell you guys about my current/soon-to-be-old-job as well? More on that to come...)

So, what am I doing? Well, in case you didn't catch it on Twitter yesterday, or you weren't aware from the evolution of this blog (aka my recent descent into tumblr), I've finally decided that I want to really make a go at a career as a TV writer (no not a TV blogger - and I love all those of you who do, but it just ain't my cup of tea).  This spring I brushed up my sample (it's a half hour comedy pilot about crazy chicks in their 20s - think a lot of my stories from when I first lived out in LA) and sent it around and got help from all the amazing executives I currently work with, and some of my agent friends...

Now let me tell you, getting a writing job in this town is NOT easy. Far from it. To get a staff writer job you need an agent or manager - which I do not have (yet) - and to get a Writers Assistant job (which is often like a baby writer) you either need to have already been a PA on the show or know someone on the show or be related to someone on the show or like sell your soul or give up your firstborn or something... so that didn't happen either (even after I had the president of the studio putting in calls for me. For real. PRESIDENT OF THE STUDIO. THIS IS A MAN WHO REPORTS TO RUPERT MURDOCH. Calling people. Telling them to hire me. And then... crickets... It is HARD you guys).

A few weeks ago I didn't think it was going to happen. I had sort of waved off this staffing season as my first real try and my boss and I had started to brainstorm how we'd try to get me onto a cable or show or at least an agent or manager, both of us thinking that I gave it my best and that was that. But then, finally, FINALLY, I got a bite!

After a great interview with the amazing Co-EPs (um, who used to be on Friday Night Lights by the way... Yes, FNL YOU GUYS! AKA MY FAVORITE SHOW IN THE HISTORY OF SHOWS! LIKE THEY WERE SO CLOSE TO TIM RIGGINS. TIM RIGGINS!) and lots of help and support from some writers and studio executives I was offered the great gig of Writers PA on the new Fox show The Finder, which, for those who don't know, is a loose spinoff of the show Bones! And as of next Monday, I'm starting over in the writers offices on the Fox lot.

So that's pretty damn cool. I'm stoked. The writing staff Hart Hanson has hired (he's the showrunner) is AMAZING (including my friend Aaron Ginsburg, who was so kickass in helping me get this gig/figure out how to make this transition to becoming a full-time TV writer/listen to my regular existential crises) and I'm going to be working with and learning from some of the best writers in this town - I'm super-duper excited and a little bit pee-my-pants nervous. I mean, making the jump from the corporate world to the non-corporate world is SCARY (I think I'm already driving Hart's assistant nuts with my endless questions. And I'm showing a lot of restraint too! I swear!). But hey - I want to be a writer and this is how it goes - no more corporate stability for me!

Seriously though, I'm so excited to just learn the ins and outs of a show from the side of the show (as opposed to the studio side) - and really excited that I get to be around smart, creative, and talented people all day (seriously, did you guys see that Josh Friedman is a consulting producer on the show? I watched his pilot Locke and Key last night and it was so damn good... I mean, I am going to be around these insanely talented scribes everyday!).  I can't wait to just soak in the smartness. (I'm just gonna sit back and soak it all in like I do the sun. And I'm really damn good at soaking in the sun. I mean, I have tanorexia, that is how good I am).

But never fear, my loyal readers (seriously, there are a bunch of you who I don't know personally but have been reading my shit for going on five years now, and, that means so much to me) - when I can I'm going to continue to work on my own stuff.  I mean shit, if I've gone almost four years of balancing all the outside writing on top of the corporate jobs, then this is going to be so exciting to actually be at a place where "I'm a writer" is the norm.  Even better, I've started the process of meeting with managers and have had some agents helping me out, so hopefully by the end of the show's wrap I'll be in a position to really get out there for pilot and staffing seasons.  Additionally I'm working on two features (one with my dear friend Sarah, aka Twitter's shinyunicorn), have a great plan for a comedy book, and will continue to post to HelloGiggles, CulturePop and the Huffington Post. Oh and I have a whole bunch of new TV pilots in the can, including a project I am obsessed with that's about badass lady stoners (seriously. Just go with it).

So, please go check out the "backdoor pilot" of The Finder here, and I'll definitely be sure to keep everyone in the loop about when the show premieres and what I am up to and all that jazz!  BUT NO SPOILERS. You guys KNOW how I feel about spoilers. I don't like 'em and I don't give 'em!

I'll do a post on my current gig some point later this week. I'll tell you all about the studio I work at and the shows I've been working on (hint: "When you're a spy...") and show pics of the ridiculous wrap gifts we've gotten over the years and the fun stuff like that. It's a little bittersweet to leave but only because I love my boss here SO MUCH (I seriously get teary-eyed thinking about leaving him), but he's so supportive and wants me to go off and do my thing and spread my wings and all that jazz... so off I go!

I think one of my favorite parts about all this is now I get to dress like a schlub. I'm sure at some point I'll miss wearing all my bright dresses, skirts and fancy tops, but oh my god I am going to be able to wear hoodies and sparkly TOMS and no make-up and even shorts... like EVERYDAY. NO MORE HIGH HEELS!

THIS IS GOING TO BE THE BEST EVER!

Parks and Recreation Bloopers

You should stop whatever you are doing and take 15 minutes of your life to enjoy these bloopers from one of the funniest shows on TV.

I LOVE TACO (this post is actually less dirty than it sounds, I swear)

Okay. So you may be familiar with this show The League. It's on FX, and like many other FX shows, I LOVE IT. I fucking love it so much that it's one of my favorite current TV shows and I ranked it as one of my Top 10 TV shows of 2010. My favorite character would be Taco for a variety of reasons, but mostly because he smokes out of a unicorn bong and learned how to notarize things and says stuff like "I have a mental erection."

And now, Jon Lajoie, the actor who plays Taco has released a delightfully hilarious music video set to a song called "Very Super Famous" which as my friend Jack mused, is totally ringtone worthy.  Check it out:

Okay now a pressing issue: is Jon Lajoie single? Does anyone have this intel?

A Fond Farewell to FNL

I'm so incredibly sad to say goodbye to my favorite show on television, Friday Night Lights, tomorrow. I'm sure you'll hear much from me before and after the episode airs, but until then I urge you to check out James Poniewozik's piece at Time:

Just as HBO's crime-drama masterpiece The Wire was a searing vision of what is wrong with America, Friday Night Lights has been a clear-eyed, full-hearted tribute to what is right with it.

Why I Will Watch 'The Chicago Code'

Tonight you can catch the premiere of the new Fox drama The Chicago Code. Have you heard of it? Did you watch the Super Bowl yesterday? Are you an idiot? If you answered yes to the first two questions and no to the third, then you know what I'm talking about.

Based on the advertising, and what I can gleam from the various trailers, teasers, and promos that have been filling the airwaves recently, I don't know that this would normally be a show that screams "must-see TV" for me (Why? Cops. Not really into shows about cops).  However, there are three reasons I will watch The Chicago Code:

(1) It's a pilot. I always like to watch pilots. I almost always watch the first episode of any show. Even if I don't think I will like it. Okay so maybe I didn't watch the pilot of Shit My Dad Says but that was out of principal.  But Blue Bloods? Not a show I would typically watch, and truthfully, that's a pilot I never watched until I was on a plane last week. But that show is GOOD.

(2) Matt Lauria. Also known as Friday Night Lights' very own Luke Cafferty, who is just an outstanding actor, and is one of The Chicago Code's regular cast members. And he's pretty nice to look at. And yeah, FNL. I'll probably watch anything that anyone from FNL is in from now on. (Except for Off the Map. Sorry Zach Gilford - I tried, I really did).

(3 - and this is the MOST important) Middlebury. I know you're thinking: um, Stamos? It's called The Chicago Code, not The Middlebury Code (which on a side note, could be a gripping CW drama about like, the ubiquitous dress code of polo shirts, Patagonia fleeces and gray New Balance kicks and the one student who dares to mix things up by maybe NOT popping his collar). But get this - the show's creator - Shawn Ryan (The Shield, The Unit, Terriers) - is one of Middlebury's most notable alums. Also an alum: me. (Less notable, but relevant, here okay?) So obviously I'm going to support any Middlebury alum (related - I'm apparently the co-president of the Los Angeles Chapter of Middlebury Alumni, a fact that entertains me to no end) and get real excited by my distant association with The Chicago Code. I mean, if at the end of every episode of a TV show I get to see MIDDKID pop up on my screen then I'm happy:

Screengrabbed from Hulu - hence the buffering.
Also? I'm going to watch the show because apparently it's really, really good. So that's something else to consider.

What about you? Will you be catching the premiere of The Chicago Code tonight? Did you know that Shawn Ryan went to Middlebury? Did you know that Middlebury has the same mascot as FNL's Dillon Panthers? Wait - before you answer that, did you know that Middlebury is actually a FOUR YEAR college in Vermont that is, kind of like, AWESOME? (Yes there's a need to insert FOUR YEAR college because I cannot tell you how many people in LA seem to think Midd is some community college in Fresno or something...)

Are you people watching 'Cougar Town' yet?

You really should be. Remember, it is NOT ABOUT COUGARS. Also, Cougar Town is meta and self-referential in the BEST way possible.

Aziz Ansari and his best friend Rob Lowe!

The best comedy you're not watching (besides Cougartown) returns to TV tomorrow night: Parks and Recreation! I've seen the first six episodes of the upcoming season and have to say that it's without a doubt some of the funniest shit on TV right now. I laughed my face off. Rob Lowe is, simply put, a revelation.

Here's a fun spoof of the credits, featuring Aziz Ansari and the incredible cast:

I have to say that while half the time I think Aziz is overexposed and annoying, he always manages to make me laugh. I do appreciate that he can take a good jab at himself. Man, I would love to hang around that set! Fun, right?

Remember: watch this show!

Midseason TV to Watch: LIGHTS OUT

As I previously wrote, I loved the pilot for the new FX show premiering tomorrow night, Lights Out. I may or may not have a little something to do with the show (like, really, super, duper, indirectly, but I feel the need to be straightforward and own up to my slight bias before I wax poetic on why you should watch the show, other than to support something I am distantly connected to) - however I've only seen the first episode, and while all 13 episodes of this much-buzzed about first season are at my disposal, I plan to watch the show in real time - it just has the appeal of one of those shows you want to soak in with the collective pop culture group, ya feel me?

However, I'll say this - you should for sure check out the pilot tomorrow, and to whet your appetite here's an in-depth character piece that FX has put together in anticipation of the show's premiere. Check it out:

Backwash (the show, not the stuff)

So remember how I sometimes write for other websites? Well here's my latest column at Digiday Daily, which I think is better than usual, and you should totally read and comment on. Or I'll just repost it here.

Crackle.com has launched its new webseries Backwash, and thanks to regular cameos from high-profile stars ranging from Jon Hamm to Sarah Silverman to John Stamos, along with clever writing and a fun concept, it’s likely we’re looking at the platform’s newest hit.

Joshua Malina is well known on the small screen thanks to his regular roles on past TV successes Sports Night and The West Wing. More recently he’s been popping up in guest starring appearances on various broadcast shows like Bones and Grey’s Anatomy. However he’s no longer the staple TV presence he once was. It’s no doubt Malina is a comedic talent (although most of his TV work happens to be in dramas), and anyone who’s been following his Twitter feed over the past year would likely agree. I’d go so far as to venture that he’s one of the most entertaining comedians on Twitter now – proving that in addition to his acting, he’s got writing chops as well – at least when it comes to bursts of 140 character creativity.
You're totally into it right? Okay keep reading!
Now we get to see the full extent of Malina’s talents as a writer, as he has turned to the even-smaller-screen for his newest venture – a webseries he wrote, produced, and stars in for Crackle.com. Backwash is a delightful and zany comedy that really showcases Malina’s writing talent for the first time in an extended format – a savvy business move for an actor trying to make a bigger splash in the writing world. As is often the case, the web is an excellent showcase for fresh talent, or as an area to experiment with new ideas. Web content can often play by different rules than that of TV, so it’s truly an excellent platform for Malina’s show and for Malina himself to take risks he might not have been able to do elsewhere.

But before we analyze the new show and its implications for branded content, first we must ask, what is Backwash? (Other than, you know, the gross stuff at the end of a drink). As Malina explained on his blog for Crackle back in March, “loosely put, it's the story of three eccentric losers and the mayhem that ensues after they inadvertently rob a bank armed only with a salami in a sweat-sock.” Better yet, check out the first episode of Backwash, titled “Val and Jonesy”.

As the first episode reveals, the comedy of Backwash is smart, quirky, and self-referential – making it perfectly suited for the web. Considering Malina has been developing the project for several years, it’s nice to see the series finally has a suitable home.

One of the highlights of the show is that each episode promises a new host, all of them recognizable names. Personally, I loved Hank Azaria in episode two, and his delivery of the line “Yes, I lost a bet” (you’ll just have to watch it to see what I mean) and I’m especially looking forward to John Stamos pop up on a future episode wearing a mullet wig reminiscent of his days on Full House. Interestingly, this sort of string of A-list talent is something that on a normal TV show might be considered stunt casting, but with a web series it only bolsters the show’s appeal. This has been especially evident with the series’ marketing campaign and overall launch. Similar to a movie, Backwash had a full scale Hollywood red-carpet premiere and it’s been regularly showcase on various news outlets – those that are both web specific, but also sites that usually don’t cover branded online content. Clearly Crackle is taking advantage of Malina (and his co-stars) more mainstream appeal.

Backwash is poised to be Crackle’s newest success story – assuming that page views maintain throughout the course of the series. This could have some interesting implications for the future of web content – first of all, similar to the transition many film actors made from features to television shows, don’t be surprised if we see more and more recognizable names writing, producing and starring in shows for the online space. It’s certainly been the trend with web content over the past few years – however Backwash really strikes me as one of the first times a web series launch has been given nearly as much focus as that of say, a cable television show.

What I’m most curious to see is whether or not Backwash, like many other web series of its ilk, attempts to make the leap from the very small screen of the internet to the slightly larger screen of our TVs. (Which would be an ironic end to the show’s lengthy development process, especially as Malina reconceived the content for the web specifically after it was suggested he steer away from television). Of course that depends on the level of success and the producers’ intentions – personally I’d love to see Backwash remain as a web series, as this would only offer further evidence as to why the web is such a great place for content creators to test the waters and try unconventional methods of production to deliver high-quality original programming.

Farewell 'Terriers', Hello 'Lights Out'

As you guys know, I'm a huge fan of the FX show Terriers - so no surprise here that I'm super bummed it was announced today that the show has not been picked up for a second season. Considering its horrible ratings, this isn't much of a shock, and I imagine we should be thankful to have gotten 13 episodes of such a show in the first place, but still, I can't help but be saddened by the news.

However, we are lucky that FX has remained committed to quality programming, and the future only holds more of that. We've got a second season of Justified coming soon, as well as Archer, but more importantly, I'm looking forward to the January premiere of the new show Lights Out. I watched the Lights Out pilot late this summer, and it was fantastic. Holt McCallany is a really captivating presence onscreen and I've been informed that the episodes only get better from the pilot, which means this should be one helluva of a damn good show. Furthermore, this might be one of the best promos ever:

It gives me chills. The music? The editing? I mean shit, this looks damn good!

So, I bid a fond farewell to the greatness that was Terriers, and look forward to the next great show FX will bring us - hopefully Lights Out lives up to that expectation.

Ready, Set, Watch 'Fringe' Now!

Okay. Listen up you guys. That TV show Fringe, you know it? Sure you do. It's one of those science-fiction genre TV series that the guy who did Lost had something to do with and Pacey is in it and "yeah, yeah, I'm going to watch it one of these days" is the mantra you continue to tell yourself whenever anyone else ever brings it up.  But look, this show? This show is epic. And amazing. And it's kind of like a movie. So much so that there's this totally badass movie trailer for this week's episode "Entrada." I've watched this episode. It is good. IT IS VERY GOOD.  It is (and pardon my French here,) mindfuckery good. Like when I finished the episode I wanted to scream at the Fox screening site for not posting more episodes. Like immediately.  I also wanted to enlist Peter Bishop in some intense therapy sessions as I am now seriously concerned for his emotional well-being but I shall refrain from saying anything more... just watch the damn preview:

Here is how this is going to go down. You are going to watch this preview more than twice. Preferably three to five to seventeen times. (Trust me, after the first go-round, you're going to want to watch it like eighteen times.) Then, this Thursday night at 9pm you are going to turn your TV on to whatever channel FOX is where you live and you are going to watch Fringe. And you are going to marvel at the fact you missed two and a half seasons of this mindblowingly amazing crazypants masterpiece of a television show and vow to yourself you will never, ever, miss another episode of Fringe, for as long as it airs, so help you God or whatever deity you choose to believe in.

Got it?

Good.

Now... GO!

Six Haikus for 'Terriers'

So like everyone is always all WATCH TERRIERS IT'S REALLY GOOD AND NO ONE IS WATCHING IT WHICH IS JUST SILLY. And I totally agree. It IS really good. And I'm like three episodes behind! Which I am somewhat ashamed to admit, especially as I am a huge proponent for this show and LOVE the show, but let's move on to the relevant point here, which is best expressed through the following haikus:

#1
Watch Terriers please.
The best show on TV now.
Donal Logue seems nice.

#2
It is Wednesday night.
That show Terriers is on.
It's better than Glee.

#3
No one watches it,
But Terriers is just great
So what's wrong with you?

#4
Did you like The Shield?
Terriers is Shawn Ryan's
and it's on FX

#5
Terriers is good
It is not about a dog
Bad marketing huh?

#6
If you watch TV
Tonight watch Terriers, not
Law & Order: LA

Okay so I might be a horrible haiku writer (I should stick to my seven day jobs, huh?) but you should really consider watching this fabulous television drama, tonight at 10pm on FX.

Feel free to leave your own Terriers haiku in the comments! Or just tell me what you think of my feeble haiku attempts. Personally I think I peaked at #5.

Halloween on 'Community'

I'm not going to say anything. Okay I am: I am going to say that you should watch this preview for the Halloween episode of Community and then ask yourself "what is wrong with me that I am not watching this show, and how can I rectify this potentially fatal error?"

I know. WATCH COMMUNITY.

It's my first FREE STUFF GIVEAWAY and it's all about 'Lone Star'

Hey Guys! So in honor of my favorite new fall show currently facing cancellation, I'm doing my first ever giveaway.  That's right - I'm going to give out FREE STUFF.

It's not all THAT exacting, but it's free. FREE!

So what am I giving away? An exclusive (OMG EXCLUSIVE) poster that was being handed out on the Fox lot during premiere week. So this came directly from the motherland, folks. At least, that's what my co-worker who heard me raving about the show and my outrage over it's poor ratings told me as she offered it to me. Now as cool as this poster is, and as much as I would love to hang onto it, it's a little weird to have posters in your office for shows you didn't actually work on, so I figure this would be better enjoyed by a real fan.  So here it is, a smallish sized (think like 10 x 20) poster featuring all-around stud and star James Wolk:

HOT, right?
So how is this going to go down? On Twitter, DUH. Essentially you have from RIGHT NOW until Monday evening at 9pm EST/6pm PST (WHEN THE SHOW RETURNS AND YOU EAST COASTERS BETTER BE WATCHING) to follow me on Twitter (@stamos) and send me a reply with #SaveLoneStar in your tweet.  Every Twitter-er who @replies me with a #SaveLoneStar in their tweet will automatically be entered.  You can also just RT one of my #SaveLoneStar tweets to be entered. The winner will be selected randomly and notified by Twitter! Then I'll DM you for your mailing address and I'll send you your prize.  Make sense? Great. Now go get tweeting!

Oh - if you don't have Twitter (HAHAHA LOSER) then please just leave a comment below (include a way for me to contact you too, btw) and you can still be entered.

MOST IMPORTANTLY: Spread the news! That's pretty much the WHOLE REASON I'm doing this giveaway, so TV viewers can share a good show with all their friends. The more people who tweet #SaveLoneStar the better - and make sure you watch this fabulous show Monday night.

Watch 'Lone Star'

The reason I'm live in LA and work in the entertainment industry is because I love the opportunity for imaginative storytelling through television.  What I've learned to love since I've been out here is that the process of making and creating a television show is an incredibly collaborative experience that comes forth from amazing talent, talent that often needs to be shared, stretched, and nurtured. That's why TV is such an incredible media - like a book series we watch characters grow and evolve over many hours and many weeks. It's really something.  And that's why it saddens me when deserving shows don't get the chance to start that journey.

Thus I present arguably one of the best pilots from the 2010-2011 television season; Lone Star. Whether or not the show itself is as good, I have no idea - and maybe none of us will if it doesn't get enough viewers next Monday. Do yourself a favor and get a glimpse at this beautiful pilot below, and give the show a chance Monday at 9pm. Tell your friends. It'd be really nice to see some quality, high-concept, unique programming succeed.

Buzz Trailer: THE WALKING DEAD

The buzz-worthy trailer for AMC's new original The Walking Dead is making the rounds. Check it out:

Thoughts:
(1) Isn't that bro the dude who loved Kiera Knightley in Love Actually?
(2) This show is going to give me nightmares, won't it?
(3) Excellent musical choice
(4) All I thought during that last shot was "Mmm, brains." Do zombies eat brains? Like really - what do zombies want? I know they're undead and what not but like, is it brains or just like human flesh or what?
(5) A Halloween premiere? Very, very smart.

Social TV Viewing Chez Moi

Let's say you were considering watching TV at my house, with me and my roommates (DiTonto, Adubs, Becca and our lovely summer squatter Bui) - what could you expect? What's it like watching TV targeted for tweens with five girls in their mid-twenties?

Well, in an email chain attempting to plan what time we'd be watching tonight's mid-season finale of Pretty Little Liars, Becca made an insanely hilarious, and likely accurate prediction for the night:

I know you're all looking forward to group watching. We all know that Adubs is going to pause a lot to discuss. And I'm going to get up 9 times to do miscellaneous activities and Stamos is gonna be like "wait what's going on" and then Bui is going to get up and get watermelon three times and leave her bowl on the floor next to her flip flops and groan about how much she's eaten. Next we'll have Ash holding her shirt over her nose from the smell of the popcorn I'll inevitably make, huffing and puffing the whole time about who is talking and what's going on and how she is nauseous and we are all going to end the PLL watching affair with the same sort of blank stare that the impeccably dressed liars take on with every new A-originated SMS.

Becca - you're a genius. Those girls really have that post-text blank stare locked down, and it's not too far off from our own collective post-viewing expressions. (And I do realize the irony of the fact that I, the TV obsessed one, is almost always the one who has no idea what's happening - but that applies to most of my life.)

Much love to the four girls I live with...

Yes, Please.

This pic and more goodness (hard to believe but there are even hotter photos of this man) can be found in this week's Entertainment Weekly, on newsstands now.

If you aren't watching White Collar, this should give you a clear sense of what exactly you are missing: a really, really attractive guy (and good TV too, but right now I'd like us all to focus on the pretty).
