Maine, again. And Tumblr again.

I'm back home in Maine and couldn't be happier about it. Things are calmer here. It feels like Christmas in a way, but that's probably because we're only ever all together here over Christmas, usually. It's me, my brother, my dad and my step-mom for the weekend, then just me and my brother until Wednesday when his fiancee gets in, then I head to Boston and Cape Cod for the weekend.

In case you haven't noticed, almost all my blogging is now taking place over at my Tumblr -- even the lengthier, more personal posts (although that only started recently and I'm still not sure I want to subject my followers to that -- but I suppose everyone signs up to follow you, just as you've signed up to follow this blog, right? Right.)

Anyway. I think for now you can plan on posts over here stopping for a while. Indefinitely, I guess. This makes me somewhat sad because I really do credit my entire writing career to this blog, but rather than think of my Tumblr as a separate blog I'm going to think of it as merely the evolution of this blog. Of course I may at some point get all these posts archived on the Tumblr or move them over there or however that works, somehow, if that's even possible. But until then, I'd recommend changing your Jaw Wired Shut bookmark to the http://stamos.tumblr.com/ URL instead! See you on Tumblr, my friends.

Dear People I Care About, Please Stop Dying

In the past month three people I care a great deal for have passed away: my stepmother's father, my mother's father, and one of my best friends' father.

It's been strange and surreal. Both grandfathers were old and lived fufulling lives and of course the end was inevitable, but still sad. The death of my good friend's dad, however, is much more shocking and sudden and upsetting. He was like a second dad to me in LA, because my friend Ali is from Santa Monica and when I first moved out here I lived with her parents. Over the past few years I would visit with them sporadically; when my dad and stepmom were in town (they were friends after Ali and I studied in Paris and all the parents came out with us and hung out together), when I would house sit for them, when I would visit Ali's mom's art studio...

I missed the service for Ali's dad this week because I'm in Florida with my family -- my grandfather only passed away last Friday, and my brother and I flew out as soon as we could. It's strange being here without him. It's strange being here without my mom either. This is a place that reminds me so much of her, and of course, of him. I used to come out here at least twice a year before I moved to Los Angeles. Before I was working and I had time to spare and Florida was a mere three hour flight from the Northeast, it was the easiest and most pleasant vacation to take in the world. It's been four years since I was last here but nothing has changed. It's as though my grandfather is just out on a walk or something. My same shampoo sits in the cabinet below the sink next to a bottle of my mom's favorite nail polish. The gardenia lotion she used every day before she passed away nearly eight years ago is still here too. I put it on and my senses are flooded with memories - of her, of being in Florida together, of taking walks on the beach, of my grandfather, of all the people I've loved and lost.

Life is so precious.

Las Vegas Does Not Exist

I spent the weekend in Las Vegas with some friends.

Las Vegas is a strange place. It's essentially one giant mall. Or Disneyland for adults. It was the third time I was there and I still feel like I've never really spent time there. By which I mean, I'm not sure that I really know Las Vegas - which is weird, because usually when I visit other cities or places I try to get to know them. You don't do that in Las Vegas. Las Vegas is a city that doesn't really exist.

It's weird.

Zack and Kelly got married!

You guys! Maine is the best place in the world. It really is. I am so lucky to have grown up there and to still be so incredibly close to all my friends who did as well.

So yes - I made it home last week, despite Hurricane Irene's attempts to delay me, and it was the most lovely trip, which was capped off with the one of the best weddings ever -- when my two dear friends Brett and Garrett, (who are, BTW, high school sweethearts -- hence the Saved By The Bell reference in the subject of this post, duh) got married.

It was incredible! Brett was BEAUTIFUL. I mean she's always beautiful but seeing one of your best friends look that beautiful and happy and in love? Well, let's just say I cried all day. Like ALL DAY. It's funny because I think some of my friends maybe thought it was because the enormity of the event had me missing my mom, but in reality, I think it was the profound emotional impact of watching someone I grew up with, someone who is like a sister to me, someone who I admire and adore and love and respect, have a day for her, a day to marry the guy who makes her the happiest in the world and God, are they happy!

Yes of course I wish my mom could have been there because she loved Brett and Brett's mom was one of her best friends, but I felt that she was there watching it all go down and crying along with me! Frankly, I think I was too touched by Brett and Garrett committing their lives to each other to really focus on anything else. I mean -- and I know I'm going to sound like a big sap here -- it really was beautiful. Brett's family loves her so much - she's the oldest of four and the only daughter and the relationship she has with her younger brothers is amazing -- inspiring really. Jesus, just writing about it right now has me tearing up again (although when I told my own brother about my endless waterworks, he responded with "Well, you did cry during cotton commercials when you were a kid").  And look, some of you might be thinking that crying at a wedding is totally normal -- which it is -- but like, holy shitballs I was losing it. I gave a reading during the ceremony, and my only goal was to not cry during that, which I made it through. But the rest? Nope. I think I lost 5 pounds in water weight! At one point at the reception some random friend of Brett's mom came up to me and said "your display of emotion was touching" which was really sweet but then I am pretty sure I turned three shades of red (well, I was really tan so maybe it wasn't that noticeable but trust me, I was blushing my face off).

Anyway. Zack and Kelly got married and it was the best wedding ever (granted I've been to like, four ever and this was the first I was ever in but WHATEVER). We were also maybe the most efficient and on-time bridal party ever. We were so on the ball I think at one point we were, like, 45 minutes ahead of schedule. As I said on my Twitter that morning, and later on in the trolley on the way to the ceremony -- we bridesmaided the SHIT out of that wedding!

Garrett isn't exactly open-eyed in this shot but I pulled it from Facebook as none of the official pics are up yet.

That one time I brought Silly Bandz to the people of Peru

This was a highlight of my Peru trip:

I bet it was a highlight for those kids too - by which I mean, hearing this crazy American lady attempt to say the word "star" in Spanish was obviously a real special moment.

(It's estrella by the way.)

The Airport Adventure of a Lifetime!

So last night I left Los Angeles on that red eye headed back to Maine. For lack of travel companions and really, anything better to do, I spontaneously decided to "live-tweet" the majority of my travel experience. Here it is in its gloriously annoying chronological entirety, from airport arrival to the security checkpoint, to the Hudson News, to the plane, to my layover, and all the way to Maine - my Airport Adventure of a Lifetime!

I think Sam Axe would approve of my travel clothes, don't you? http://twitpic.com/2k4uvm

Airport Security Check vs. The Jolly Rancher. It's a race against time!

I'm about to take a massive tweet dump. #gross

Dear Air Tran, thanks for calling me 5 times to warn me about a gate change but not telling me about the 40 min flight delay. #WTFisAirTran

That was fast. Airport Security Check: 1 Stamos: 0 #thejollyrancher

I'm offended that no one else in line has acknowledged my Chuck Finley t-shirt. Apparently you all have horrible taste in television.

Remember that time that lady called me a cultural fascist for hating Private Practice? That was awesome.

Omg thank GOD I found the Nicholas Sparks section: http://twitpic.com/2k5cau #gross

Tucker Max - for your sake, I hope they don't serve beer in hell.

I'm wearing jeggings. #gross

Airports: the one place it's socially acceptable to drink alone. #beerme

I lost my license and have developed the terrible habit of flashing my passport as though it were a police badge.

I just realized I should probably head over to the direction of my gate. At some point. #thejollyrancher

Ever worry you're gonna take an Adderall when you mean to take a Xanax? #whitegirlproblems

They should really just rename Air Tran to Budget. Just Budget.

I just dominated See's Candies. It's the Airport Trip of a Lifetime!

Licorice, Peach, Buttered Popcorn and a whole lot of Sizzling Cinnamon: http://twitpic.com/2k5p28 #jellybelly

Air Tran is the Fung Wah of airlines.

I don't want this airport adventure to end! It's like I'm playing Tom Hanks in my own Tom Hanks movie.

Going to the airplane bathroom - excuse me, lavatory - is miserable.

No seriously, what IS Air Tran?

Spotted - baby who will potentially cry at 6 o'clock.

That's right Mr. Flight Attendant. You get me that non-bottled water.

Of all the drugs I'm prescribed I'd have to say Xanax has the worst chemical aftertaste. #whitegirlproblems

This will be the best flight ever, by default. There's no one sitting next to me.

Sir, you will have to pry this mobile device from my cold dead hands if you want me to power off.

Woke up to creepy dude two seats over patting my back. Never again, Air Tran.

First thing I spot on layover in Baltimore: http://twitpic.com/2k7ndw #sillybands #Imbaaaaack

MAINE! (Thus ends tweet dump. Going off the grid. Thanks for playing)

I'm so excited to go to Maine I literally might vomit

I haven't been home in 9 months. Yes, I still consider Maine home and yes this is the longest I've ever gone without going home.

I pretty much could just rewrite this post from two years ago word for word - it really sums up all the emotions coursing through my brain right now.

Mostly I'm excited for all the activities. Kayaking, sailing, tennis - the smell of the amazing fresh ocean air and being outside in the best state ever... oh man, get me there now!

Sailing with my dad off of Ferry Beach in Scarborough, ME

Kayaking with my brother in our backyard. Yes, that is literally our backyard.

"It's always fun to get away from camp. Even for an hour!"

I spent the 4th of July weekend in the lovely Napa Valley region, on a "girls and gays" trip to Sonoma for lots of wine tastings and Broadway sing-alongs. It was heavenly.

I hadn't left LA since April, and before that I guess it had been Christmas. As nice as it is to stay local on long weekends and relax, I forgot how incredibly refreshing it is to get out of town.

When we were in the cab on the way home from the airport yesterday I turned to my friends and remarked at how lovely it was to get away. DiTonto, of course, had the perfect response, in the form of a Wet Hot American Summer quote:

Please note - Waterville, Maine doesn't actually look like that.

A Much-Needed Vacation

Jaw Wired Shut is going on a vacation for a few days. Where? To the desert my friends.

Yes, it's that time of year again when I join the masses in the sweltering heat for three days of hippie dancing and great tunes at the Coachella Valley Music Festival. I cannot wait. I'm going to be trendspotting at Coachella and writing about it for www.trendcentral.com (my former gig!) and potentially covering the fest for HuffPo as well. And you better believe I'll be posting some highlights here.

In the meanwhile, don't expect to see me pop up on the internet until Monday, except for the occasional Twitter update. And even though after the weekend I will be back in town recovering from what is sure to be an epic trip, my dad and step-mom are in town and I'm moving right into family vacation time. I won't actually be back in full swing until next Wednesday.

But, don't be a stranger! Keep reading - and feel free to check in and say hello.

That's So Maine

I'm on vacation. Could you tell?

I'm currently in Maine, enjoying a life without cable TV, or at the moment, hot water (seriously). It's really nice to get out of the LA bubble, and even nicer to be back in a small town, get down to your roots and whatnot.

You read that correctly, by the way - I do not have cable TV or hot water.

Fortunately the plumber is coming this afternoon to deal with the hot water issue, which is a good thing. Last night I attempted to take a cold shower, which really just felt like I was taking an ice pick to my brain.

Also, I slept for 11 hours last night. I can't even remember the last time that happened... vacation really is a beautiful thing.

Happy Holidays by the way... new posts to come next week when I am back in LA, including a best of the blog roundup and my new years resolutions, one of which is blogging more regularly (both here and for HuffPo). And again to "be professional" which hasn't worked out too well for me thus far. But hey, I'm still gainfully employed, so that's something, right?

This probably won't be my last post of 2009, but some things to look forward to in 2010 include:
  • A fun crowdsourcing article-writing experiment
  • I'm going to have to throw my hat in the ring with a best of the decade's TV post, (or something along those lines... I'll probably make fun of other people's posts, and then talk about why I love Bones or attempt to convince people that Twitter is THE FUTURE).
  • I'll be starting a new freelancing gig that should bring about some interesting Hollywood stories, or at least some more money in my pocket
  • I might get a hair cut
  • After a few rewrites I'm going to start letting people read my TV pilot
But for now, I'm going to wait for the plumber.

Introducing, for the first time ever, A REAL VACATION

Hello friends, loyal readers, family members, and whoever it is that searched "can I smoke a cigarette with my jaw wired shut" (no you cannot, and what are you doing smoking in the first place? It's so passé); I have an announcement:

I am going on vacation. Yes, a REAL vacation; I am not bringing my computer with me.

Please, pick up your suddenly dropped jaw up off the floor and pretend to not be so surprised! It is true--for the next 10 days I shall be computer free.*

What a momentous occasion this is! I am not only going to be computer free, but temporarily JOB FREE. (Is this what it was like during the Neolithic Age or something? Shall I become a hunter and gatherer? The nomadic life would suit me well, I think it would!). Yes, I am going to be completely unhinged, detached and enjoying every second of it. There will be dancing, and swimming, and sailing, and kayaking, and running, and tennis, and laughter OH THE LAUGHTER!

I anticipate that I will experience slight withdrawal, almost at once, however I will have a six hour plane ride to New York to prepare** and then I will be swept away from one activity to the next, from the city to Rye for a wedding, back to the city briefly and then off to Maine--the true one and only love of my life. Computer shumputer. I don't need that nonsense! I'm bringing four books! And a journal! I am going to love it!***

*I will have my iPhone as well as access to my dad's laptop and probably my step-mom's too. So maybe I am exaggerating. So maybe I am not completely without computer access. But this is HUGE for me, am I right or am I right?
**By prepare, I mean take a Xanax and pass out.
***Within three hours I will be freaking out and will take more Xanax.

I'm baaaaaaaaaaaack!

Hi!

Hi!

Hi everyone!

Did you miss me? Were you crying everyday thinking WHAT OMG NO WARNING SHE JUST STOPS BLOGGING FOR A FEW DAYS? Where's my Stamos vs. Stamos? Where's my Family Guy Friday? Where's my weekly dose of narcissism?

SORRY BOUT THAT! Things just got soooooooooo hectic, what with me taking a vacation and all, that I just didn't have time to blog. But friends, dear friends, LET ME TELL YOU, what a vacation it was!

COACHELLA WAS PHENOMENAL. Truly. Life-changing. I just want to listen to music ALL THE TIME NOW. NOT THAT I DIDN'T BEFORE! WOOOOO.

Okay but with vacation comes catch up. So 'scuse me while I return to the silence and catch up on my life. Be back soon with fascinating tales and trials and tribulations to share.

Celebration, Panic, Celebration

I am a lucky asshole.

Seriously.

So, as noted in my airport post yesterday, I spent most of my 25th birthday traveling. While on the 6 hour flight to LA I read a lot in a new book (YA Fantasy, obv) and watched several episodes of 30 Rock before my computer died. Upon arrival, I was so excited to be back in LA I packed up my various carry-ons quite quickly, booked it to the baggage claim, and met DiTonto outside, who had decked out my car in some serious birthday decorations and was blasting Manu Chao—a great welcome home/birthday surprise. (And thank God she brought my car because my 60+ lb. bag would not have fit in her VW Bug). We went straight to one of our fave dinner joints: Panera (so classy) where I got a lot of Happy Birthdays and perplexed expressions when people realized we were, in fact, serious, and yes, in fact, celebrating a 25th birthday dinner at Panera of all places.

While Ash and I were catching up we both commented on visiting friends back East and how everyone else’s apartments seemed to be a lot more “adult” or together than ours is. Then we ran over a giant palm frond, and then in the middle of the road pulled over and I got underneath the car and yanked it out, and we then decided we would bring it to our apartment (and we wonder why our place looks like a cross between a deserted beach shack and a fraternity house).

Back at home we played some video games for a little bit and then, feeling the tug of our messed up time cycles, DiTonto went to bed and I decided I would unpack a little bit and get some sleep myself.

Or so I thought.

I walked into my room and started to go through my stuff, admiring my new shoes, wondering how I left the most random things at home in New York when all of a sudden I realized, with certainty, something, very, very bad.

I left my computer on the airplane.

Yes, I, girl with a computer tethered to her arm, left my beloved machine and keeper of all I hold dear under the seat in front of me on the Goddamn airplane.

Panic ensued. As did feelings of nausea, hyperventilation, as well as a game plan as to how I was going to finance my new MacBook Pro that I would surely have to buy—all without telling my dad for at least a month. Trying to act rationally, I told myself it would be okay because I have most all of my files backed up on an external hard drive I keep at home.

I spent about 45 minutes on the phone with various people at Continental, attempting to discern whether or not my plane had already left LAX, where it was headed to next, and if anyone had discovered a computer on board and was good Samaritan enough to turn it in.

In what felt like a race against time, around 10:45 pm I booked it to the airport, employing techniques from the 20 minutes I once watched of The Secret, reciting, “I will get back this computer. My computer will be returned to me” over and over again, begging with the Universe to cut me some slack—it’s my birthday!

Well, I guess begging the Universe/God for kindness/to return computer works because when I pulled into short-term parking, ran as fast as I could to the Continental desk at the terminal, a nice woman there made a few calls, and twenty minutes later my computer was back in my hands, and I no longer felt a strong urge to vomit.

Like I said, I am a lucky asshole.

Why Paper Mario runied my life

For those dutiful readers who follow my daily musings, there's a good chance most of you are back at work this week. I am not. It's awesome.

Thing is, I had serious plans to do lots of writing and blogging over this lovely vacation, but, clearly, I have not.

Instead, all free downtime at home has been spent playing Paper Mario, which is my new favorite video game. Yes, it is an RPG (role playing game, duh), but because it's Mario, I like to think it's less geeky than if I were playing say, Legend of Zelda (coming up next, however).

And fortunately, the chances of me showing up to work dressed like Mario are slim to none: I don't own blue overalls, and sadly (?) I can't grow a mustache.

And if you are at a total lost for what I am talking about, here's a little preview of the game, so you can better understand the completely useless way I am using my time.

In other news, I am going to be 25 in LESS THAN A WEEK. Not cool.

And now, what you've ALL been waiting for!

So I bet you woke up yesterday morning and thought to yourself, I wonder if Annie got everything she asked for for Christmas (list refresher here). And let me tell you right now: I didn't.

But THAT, my friends, is OKAY. Of course it is! What would Christmas be without disappointment?

HOWEVER, let me tell you all about the exciting presents I did find under our tree this year.

(I should preface this by saying in my family it's a bit of an unconventional Christmas--my brother and I have our own traditions in the morning, then we spend the bulk of the day with family friends, and return home to find our dad and step-mom have dutifully played the role of Santa and our tree is once again replenished with gifts.)

This year Josh (my brother) and I decided that rather than spend money we don't have on gifts, let's be as frugal as possible. I gave him some scripts (because he is an ACTOR) and a $75 gift card to iTunes (that I obv didn't pay for--re-gifted company holiday bonus present, duh).

As for me?

As we ALL know (by we, I mean you, me and the handful of other readers of this here blog--a few of which have come out of the woodwork since I've been back in the hometown I might add) my tastes are not that different from that of a 12 year old boy, circa 1999. My big present from my brother was... a NINTENDO GAME CUBE! In fact, his Nintendo Game Cube, that he got for Christmas... circa 1999! YES. (Long time readers may recall I asked him for this like 6 months ago so it's about time he delivered.) Most exciting would be the games he included, and the only 4 I could possibly want:
The Mega Sonic Collection (I am SO going to re-beat Sonic 2),
MarioKart Double Dash (even better than the N64 version, I SWEAR),
Zelda (because I am SO Link--see previous post about LARPing outfit), and
Paper Mario which apparently is SWEET (direct quote from my SISTER--not really my sister but we call each other that OKAY--"i want to play paper mario sooooo bad. the possible combo of south park mediums and maaaaaaario make me quite giddy.")

ALSO, Josh gave me a comic book that has FANTASTIC FOUR AND IRON MAN which is AWESOME because I am starting to read more comic books (as opposed to only watching the movies--like I said, HUGE NERD).

When the parentalish units arrived, real presents came--such as tennis lessons (hurrah! It was on the list!), a gift certificate to LuLu Lemon (as was also asked for), and my most prized new possession--A BUTTER DISH (get excited, roommates!). There were other fun things, but I believe these are most worth noting. I did a handful of shopping in NYC prior to getting to Maine so I think all the new clothes are essentially Christmas presents as well (lotsa new shoes, Cowboy boots included).

It was a nice little Christmas this year--usually my brother and I get stressed out spending money we don't have on each other and this year it was awesome not to spend a dime. And the less presents you get the more you get to sleep in. WHICH IS AWESOME.

On a more serious note--it is SO nice to be home and to see all the friends and family I don't get to see during the rest of the year. I honestly love my community here in Maine and love running into so many people. The salt of the earth! And I love getting to where my BEAN BOOTS ALL THE TIME. BEAN BOOTS ARE AWESOME.

Well it's about 3pm here and I am still in my PJs. VACATION IS AWESOME!

I'm Thankful We Get Another Vacation in Three Weeks

Good Morning all, and welcome back to what is sure to be a really long work-week.

Despite a lovely and restful Thanksgiving holiday, I feel like total ass right now after a mere three hours of sleep last night. Why a sudden 11th hour onslaught of insomnia after steady 8-hours-of-sleep-per-night? Ah yes, the typical back to work anxiety plagued me well into the night (or this morning, rather) as well as stressing over the fact that I am going to be turning 25 in a month (and I have yet to plan my big party or stop living in denial of my pathetically absent love-life) as well as deliberations over what I will wear to a tacky Christmas party this weekend (I am envisioning a lot of sequins).

Happy Thanksgiving too—I had intentions of posting over the weekend, however I spent the majority of my time reading the last two of the Twilight books or watching a lot of average movies. Actually, I saw two double features over the weekend. Of course, when I say double feature I mean that I paid for one movie and timed it precisely so I could sneak into another one just after, without paying. This worked quite well, except during the Four Christmases/Australia (worst movie ever) transition in which the president of Tom’s Shoes attempted to thank DiTonto for wearing her shoes, well DiTonto attempted to nonchalantly run/walk up the stairs without getting caught, and thus spurned nice president of ecologically-minded shoe company.

Anyway, it’s hard to believe we are so close to Christmas and that I really just have two weekends left in LA before I head back East. I am so excited for New York and Maine... however I am truly nervous for the cold weather, considering it was in the low 60s yesterday and I was wearing a down jacket. Now I’m embarrassed.

SMELL-A

Smell A. Get it? Rhymes with LA? What I am trying to say here is I never before notice how incredibly perfect Maine smells. That is, until I lived in LA. All weekend in Maine I just couldn’t believe what a breath of fresh air that place is! Even the stinky sulphuric salt marsh smells divine! That’s not to say that LA smells bad, although certainly parts of it do (like outside Benitos Tacos on Santa Monica Blvd and Federal, located just south of the site of Car Accident #1), but I guess Maine just smells so damn good I was acutely aware of its perfectly pungent aromas all weekend long.

On a side note I found it entertaining that when in LA it's almost inescapable to escape multitudes of Spanish-speakers while lounging at the beach. When in Maine? French Canadians everywhere. Seriously everywhere. Kind of incredible.

They say you can never go home again (not sure who says that and why) however, I beg to disagree. Going home was fantastic and sure it’s always going to be a little different but the truth of the matter is that going home is one of the best experiences I have nowadays. Not sure where that ranks on the pathetic scale, but I know I had a great weekend and am already doing the countdown until Christmas.

Seriously though... the way Maine smells? I just wish I could bottle it up and take it with me everywhere.

The Way Life Should Be

Tonight, at 11:30 pm I am taking off for MAINE (via Washington DC and a really annoying almost 2-hour layover). I am SO EXCITED. OMG. SO. EXCITED. SO.

I’ve been counting down the days to my trip to the GREAT STATE for what feels like forever. I haven’t been home since Christmas and couldn’t be more thrilled to take a 4 day vacation to Vacationland.

The thing I am most excited for? An Italian. I am not talking about some random man of European descent I might come upon wandering the streets of Portland. I am talking about a sandwich. And not just any sandwich. THE BEST SANDWICH EVER. EVER.

The Italian is the perfect combination of the following:

Sub roll
Ham
American Cheese
Green peppers
Pickles
Olives
Salt & Pepper
a little bit of oil & vinegar
and a lot of perfection

Most people also get theirs with onions and tomatoes, but I choose not to. The other debate is regarding the olives because the Italian seller of my youth, Town Landing Market, down the street, makes their Italians with black olives whereas Maine’s favorite chain sub-and-pizza shop Amato’s uses kalamta olives. I think I prefer Town Landing, but mostly for the idyllic setting and nostalgia.

In any event, my mouth is salivating at the mere thought of this delectable taste of heaven and I’ve instructed my father to pick up at the airport, sandwich in hand, and I don’t care that it’s 10 am and I haven’t eaten since I was in LA, I WANT THE SANDWICH.

Other Maine treats I can’t wait for? Too many to count. (Worth mentioning are fresh blueberries, fresh seafood, homemade Moose Tracks ice cream, Moxie, and really just oh so many Italian sandwiches).

True to the large sign you pass on I-295 heading North from Boston: Maine, The Way Life Should Be.
